The National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (Anvisa) prohibited the sale of all ointments for styling and braiding hair. With this procedure in place, not many of these products could be sold in Brazil. Additionally, beauty professionals should not use the product on clients.
According to Anvisa, the ban is related to the unwanted effects of the ointment on vision. This is because some people who have used the product have had severe eye irritation.
Reports indicate that some brands have caused eye pain and irritation, swollen eyelids and difficulty seeing, symptoms that were observed after washing the hair where the product was used, or after contact with pool or sea water.
According to Sérgio Kwitko, a CBO member and president of the Brazilian Cornea Association, the ointment may pose a threat to consumers’ vision. “Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and methylthiazolinone (MI) are commonly used chemical compounds in the formulation of this type of cosmetics, he explained that these preservatives contain elements that are toxic to the skin and mucous membranes, and can cause allergic reactions and burns on the skin. eyes and skin, as well as pulmonary intoxication and neurotoxicity.
In this sense, the agency stressed that, for the moment, investigators are carrying out tests and analyzes to investigate the case and provide more detailed information.
